The previous self response deadline for July 31 has now been extended to October 31, 2020. More than 70 million households across the U.S. have participated in the head count. While it is being encouraged for people to respond as soon as they can (via internet, phone, or paper) the more time allocated will postpone field operations until June 1. Under the shifted timeline, census workers are not set to start door to door outreach until mid-August. In addition, the mobile assistance questionnaire program where Census staff were supposed to be at events and locations where people gather in communities with typically low response rates has been delayed.
